Hiện nay có khoảng 200-300 loài Lan cẩm cù trên thế giới, phân bố chủ yếu ở những vùng nhiệt đới, đặc biệt ở khu vực Đông Nam Á.

Tên gọi: Hoa Vô Ưu, Sala , Đầu Lân, Ngọc Kỳ Lân, hay Hàm Rồng. Danh pháp quốc tế: Couroupita guianensis. Họ: Asalpinioidae. Danh pháp khoa học hoa Vô Ưu do nhà thực vật học người Pháp J.F.Aubel đặt vào năm 1755. Sala phổ biến trong khu rừng tân nhiệt đới, đặc biệt là ở lưu vực sông Amazon và có nguồn gốc ở Guyana (Nam Mỹ). Ngày nay, có thể tìm thấy Sala ở Ấn Độ, miền nam dãy núi Hy Mã Lạp, và được trồng nhiều nơi ở Nam Á và Đông Nam Á. Hoa đượm một màu đỏ cam đặc trưng, màu sắc đầy sức sống mang ý nghĩa lạc quan, sung túc, thịnh vượng. Với người Ấn Độ, đây là một loài cây rất linh thiêng, gắn liền với lịch sử Phật giáo. Tương truyền rằng Đức Phật đã chọn rừng cây Sala để nhập diệt, đó cũng là nơi mà bảy lần trong tiền kiếp Ngài đã nhập diệt. "Vô ưu" có nghĩa là không muộn phiền. Hoa Sala còn là biểu tượng hướng đến sự bất diệt, thường còn, chân ngã, chân lạc...Loài hoa này cũng là biểu tượng của lòng nhân đức, bao dung, trung thành và sự thông thái.

Quả Sala có chứa các chất kháng sinh, kháng nấm, sát khuẩn và giảm đau, được sử dụng để chữa bệnh cảm lạnh và đau dạ dày. Nước ép từ lá được dùng để chữa các bệnh ngoài da.

Paper for water

Paper For Water was on Nickelodeon! On June 17th, the amazing work by Paper For Water was featured on Nickelodeon: "The HALO Effect" television series. HALO stands for helping an leading others. Youth who inspire us to make this world a better place create The HALO Effect. Every month the show follows the stories of incredible kids who are using their passion and creativity to help those in need. Ordinary kids doing extraordinary things - that's The HALO Effect. If you haven't seen the full episode, now's your chance.  Click Here for the link.  There are a lot of commercials at the beginning but once the episode starts there isn't another commercial until the end.  Watch it and share it with your friends and family and anyone who doesn't know about Paper For Water!

The Premier Party

Thank you to the 150 plus donors and volunteers and friends who came out to see the premier of our Nickelodeon episode on June 17th.  Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas provided the perfect venue for the event.

Garret Chambers with Pizza Patron was kind enough to donate 45 pizzas and one of our board members, Holly Miori provided the cookies for dessert.  Everyone had a great time and the Paper For Water message was spread to tens thousands across the United States through the Nickelodeon HALO Effect episode.

Thank you also to the Paper Dolls who helped serve the pizza and organize the evening's festivities.  A ton of ornaments were exchanged for donations to help provide more people around the world with clean water.

Thank you to Alison Ford, our regional representative from Living Water International who also came and spoke about the fantastic work that Living Water is doing around the globe.  Thank you also to Karla Alfaro, a board member for Dig Deep, the organization we partnered with for the New Mexico Navajo Reservation project.  Karla came and gave a brief overview of the work being accomplished in 2016 on the Smith Lake Reservation.

We can't wait for the next TV show to be filmed and the next premier.  We're kind of teasing since there is nothing currently lined up.  If you have any connections, spread the word about what Paper For Water is doing.

Paper Dolls update
Most Tuesday mornings around 11 am magic happens. A group of volunteers gather and spend the morning and early afternoon visiting, fellowshipping and folding paper.

On June 24th, the Paper Dolls drove all the way to Oklahoma to meet Sister Yen Pham.  Sister Pham is a Vietnamese Carmelite nun who is an amazing origami artist.  Sister Pham has a love for providing clean water and the Word of God to the Thirsty.  She spent a lot of time teaching the Paper Dolls some new techniques.

First Presbyterian Church of Dallas and The Most Inspirational Donation of the Month

On June 14th, Isabelle went to First Presbyterian Church Dallas to help with their Vacation Bible School.  Isabelle delivered a great presentation and got all the youth excited and involved with helping to address the World Water Crisis.

The VBS children collected coins for Paper For Water throughout the week.

One kindergartner lost her first tooth while at VBS.  She took it home in a zip lock bag for the tooth fairy not knowing what would happen.  When the student and her grandmother came the next day she told the director what happened earlier that morning.  The grandmother who had gone to pick up her granddaughters said as she was picking the kids up, "Oh, I forgot to get your granddad's jar of coins this morning which we talked about bringing.  I am sorry."  The little girls said, "It's ok.  I have $5 from the tooth fairy and I will take it.  The grandmother asked if she was sure and she said, "Yes, it's for kids who don't have any water."

Here are some pictures from the San Jose Monte Chiquito project.

The community of San Jose Monte Chiquito in Mexico is comprised of 421 local families (over 2,100 people).  The community has a health clinic, primary, secondary, and vocational school and a local church.  The community families have been unable to afford water from tanker trucks and have instead been relying on a contaminated well. 

Paper For Water joins with Living Water International in celebrating that the Community of San Jose Monte Chiquito now has access to clean water and the Word.
