The Saint of the Dark Night
A Poetry Series on St. John of the Cross
By Sr. Agatha Yen Pham, OCD
1. A Humble Beginning
A quiet child beneath Spain's sky,
He learned to serve, not question why.
With gentle hands and faithful heart,
God shaped His saint from life's first start.
2. Love for the Poor
He walked where sorrow filled the street,
With kindness flowing at his feet.
He found in every weary face
The hidden image of God's grace.
3. The Carmelite Call
The Lord invited, "Come with Me."
His heart replied most willingly.
He left the world with joy untold,
To seek a treasure more than gold.
4. A Life of Prayer
Within the silence, God would speak;
His strength was found in growing weak.
Each prayer became a living flame,
That burned with love in Jesus' name.
5. Beside Teresa
With Teresa, brave and wise,
They fixed their hearts on heaven's prize.
Together, faithful to God's will,
They climbed the holy Carmel hill.
6. The Cost of Reform
Not all embraced the path of light;
Some answered love with fear and spite.
Yet truth stood firm though storms increased,
For God alone could give them peace.
7. Behind Locked Doors
The prison walls were dark and cold;
The chains were strong, the nights were long.
Yet no one saw what heaven knew:
God's brightest light was shining through.
8. The Dark Night
When every earthly comfort fled,
His soul by unseen mercy led.
The darkest road he dared to tread
Was where God's hidden light was spread.
9. Songs in the Darkness
Though iron bars confined his frame,
His heart still sang the Savior's name.
No prison could imprison love
That flowed from God who reigns above.
10. The Mystic Fire
His words became a lantern bright,
For souls that wandered through the night.
Each verse revealed Love's burning flame,
Forever praising Jesus' name.
11. The Climb
The mountain path was steep and long,
Yet grace became his pilgrim song.
The higher love would draw him near,
The less he clung to earthly fear.
12. Holy Detachment
Empty hands received far more
Than all the riches held before.
Who lets the passing world depart
Makes room for God within the heart.
13. Silent Union
No voice was heard, no vision shown,
Yet God and soul were not alone.
Within the stillness deep and mild,
The Father smiled upon His child.
14. Love Purifies
The fire that seemed to bring him pain
Would cleanse his heart like gentle rain.
What once was loss became delight,
As love transformed the darkest night.
15. The Hidden Saint
He sought no honor, crown, or fame;
He lived unknown in Jesus' name.
The smallest servant heaven knew
Became a saint both strong and true.
16. The Teacher
His humble pen still lights the way
For those who seek God's face today.
Each page invites the soul above
To trust the Father's endless love.
17. A Peaceful Passing
His earthly journey reached its close,
Like evening light at day's repose.
He entered joy beyond the skies,
Where endless love shall never die.
18. His Lasting Voice
Across the centuries we hear
His words still calm the soul's deep fear.
The darkest night will surely end;
Christ walks beside us as our Friend.
19. The Carmelite Flame
The fire of Carmel still burns bright,
A beacon through the longest night.
Its saints remind the world each day:
Love is the everlasting way.
20. Through the Night
When shadows gather all around,
And hope is difficult to find,
Remember what God's servant knew:
The darkest night leads home to You.
