Mussels Shells

The Secret of the Gilded Shell

Part 1: The Muddy Discovery

Beneath the quiet waters of the pond,

A hidden secret waited, calm and deep.

For ten long years, beneath the river clay,

It lay forgotten in a quiet sleep.

Until a summer drought revealed the bed,

And Maeve brought home a dozen weathered shells.

She scrubbed the mud and painted them in gold,

Unaware of stories they might tell.

Beneath a floral print of pink and blue,

Her fingers found a small, hidden seam.

A tiny cylinder of tarnished brass,

To wake the village from an ancient dream.

Part 2: The Missing Manuscript

With silver tweezers and a steady hand,

She pulled a rolled slip from the metal cylinder.

A single line of faded, ink-blue script,

That set her curious mind and heart a-fluster:

“Where the third rose blooms upon the wood,

The lost estate key patiently awaits.”

Ten years ago, the village painter vanished,

Leaving no record of his vast estate.

Looking down at the decoupaged shell,

She saw the answer plain as summer day—

Not in the mud or woods behind her house,

But in the library, a mile away.

Part 3: The Library’s Secret

Before the master's oil portrait she stood,

Where painted vines hung from an iron gate.

Her eyes traced down to where three roses bloomed,

To claim the secret hidden from their fate.

Behind the heavy, carved and gilded frame,

Tucked out of sight, an velvet pouch was bound.

Inside: an iron key and simple deed,

Leaving his cottage to the town renowned.

Now on her desk, beside her gold-rimmed shells,

The ancient key rests safely in the light.

A reminder that the sweetest discoveries

Are waiting close at home, just out of sight.

A Five-Poem Series

1. Hidden Beneath the Mud

For years beneath the quiet clay,
A little shell in silence lay.
A summer drought revealed its gleam,
Beginning one forgotten dream.

2. The Golden Surprise

Maeve brushed the mud and painted gold,
A weathered shell from days of old.
Beneath bright flowers, neat and fair,
She found a secret hidden there.

3. The Mysterious Message

A tiny scroll with faded blue,
Contained a single hidden clue:
"Where blooms the third rose on the wood,
The waiting key still rests for good."

4. The Painter's Gift

Behind the portrait's gilded frame,
The third rose pointed all the same.
An iron key and simple deed
Fulfilled the painter's final deed.

5. Treasures Close to Home

The golden shell now rests nearby,
A memory that time can't hide.
The greatest treasures we may seek
Are often found where we least think.
