The Saint of the Dark Night
A child of Spain with humble birth,
He sought no riches of the earth.
The poor became his daily friend,
Whose broken hearts he longed to mend.
He entered Carmel, vowed to pray,
And walked with Christ the narrow way.
With Teresa, strong in grace,
He helped renew that sacred place.
Opposition soon arose,
From those who feared the path he chose.
They locked him in a prison bare,
Yet God was waiting for him there.
The darkest night became his dawn;
His hope in Christ was never gone.
He wrote of Love no chains could bind,
A fire that burns within the mind.
Through every trial his faith increased;
His wounded soul found perfect peace.
Today his voice still calls above:
"Walk through the night, and trust God's love."
