The Saint of the Dark Night
A Poetry Series on St. John of the Cross
By Sr. Agatha Yen Pham, OCD
1. A Child of Spain
Born beneath Spain's sunlit sky,
He learned to serve with humble joy.
The poor became his treasured friends,
Whose wounds he longed to help and mend.
2. The Carmelite Call
The Lord called softly, "Follow Me."
He answered with simplicity.
He left behind the world's embrace
To seek God's everlasting grace.
3. A Holy Reform
With Teresa, faithful, wise,
They fixed their hearts on heaven's prize.
They led Carmel by prayer and love,
With eyes set firmly on above.
4. The Prison Cell
Opposition filled the air;
They locked him in a prison bare.
Yet in the silence, cold and deep,
The Shepherd watched His faithful sheep.
5. The Dark Night
When every earthly light grew dim,
He placed his hope alone in Him.
The darkest night became the way
That led his soul to endless day.
6. Songs of Love
Within the darkness rose a flame
That sang the glory of Christ's name.
No chain could bind the love he knew;
God's light was always shining through.
7. The Living Flame
His writings gently light the road
For weary hearts that bear life's load.
They teach that love alone can raise
The soul to God through nights and days.
8. A Faith Refined
Each trial became a sacred fire,
Purifying each desire.
The cross he carried day by day
Prepared his soul for heaven's way.
9. The Hidden Saint
He sought no honor, wealth, or fame,
But only Christ's most holy name.
His quiet life still speaks today
To all who walk the narrow way.
10. Through the Night
If darkness hides tomorrow's light,
Walk on by faith throughout the night.
For Christ will lead the faithful soul
Until His love has made us whole.
